10 Day Fast: Instructions
Corporate Prayer and Fasting
For Surge Ministries
Dates: January 22-31, 2019 (10 Days)
Biblical Fasting – A supernatural discipline of depriving the body from nourishment and the pleasurable taste of food. A Biblical fast is always combined with prayer.
- Fasting without prayer, purpose, and a plan is just a diet.
- Although not watching movies or avoiding social media are great ways to make sacrifices and increase focus, these actions are not considered as God’s strategy for a biblical formula for prayer and fasting.
- Fasting is one of the Christian duties. It keeps you sensitive to God’s Spirit, enabling you to live holy. (Rom. 1-2) (Jentezen Franklin, Fasting, 2008)
Types of Fasts – absolute(no food/no water), normal (water only), and partial fasts (certain types of food) are found in the bible. Most common – partial fast (Daniel Fast)
Romans 14:17 NASB - for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 6:17-18 NASB - “Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. “But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Matthew 17: 21 NASB “But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
Isaiah 58: 6-7 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter -- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”
Fasting and Your Heart
Humility – Luke 18:11-12 – Fasting must always be done in humility. We can not see results if we are religious or hypocritical.
Motives – We must fast and pray in a way that aligns with the will of God.
Discretion – Matthew 6:18 tells us to fast in secret. When we have the right discretion and right heart, God will reward us.
It’s not about the food! – John 4:23-34, Matt. 4:4

1. Drinks – water, de-caf tea, de-caf coffee. If you have a juicer, make your juice. Apple and Cranberry juice. Stay away from acidic juices.
2. Foods - Fruits, vegetables, and nuts. Potatoes in moderation. Use olive oil and vinegar.
